Last weekend, while the world seemed engrossed in social media posts of desert sunsets, I felt absolutely no FOMO as the debut of Breakaway Arizona delivered everything I could've asked for and more.
Held at Sloan Park in Mesa, where the Chicago Cubs play spring training baseball, Breakaway had this amazing open-air vibe that just felt right.Imagine a giant, grassy field buzzing with energy, surrounded by the backdrop of Arizona's stunning desert sunsets and filled with the kind of music that pulls you in and keeps you there. It felt like its own incredible festival experience carved out just for us — minus the insane crowds and exorbitant prices. For a weekend, Sloan Park turned into the heart of Arizona’s own festival scene, and I couldn’t have asked for a better place to be.
The stacked lineup offered incredible performances, but a few artists truly stole the show for me: Sofi Tukker, Levity, Wax Motif, and, of course, The Chainsmokers. Sofi Tukker unleashed an electric, global dance vibe that instantly made the night feel larger than its Mesa setting. Their set was pure, unfiltered fun — bouncing between house beats, jungle rhythms, and those signature guitar moments that make you feel like you’re part of some wild adventure. Sophie’s stage presence was magnetic, and Tucker’s energy never dropped for a second. There was something about hearing "Best Friend" and "Drinkee" live, under the open sky, that just made the whole place feel like one giant family reunion — even if you didn’t know anyone around you.
Then Levity took the stage and seriously elevated the entire weekend. Their set was a masterclass in dynamic shifts, blending emotional drops with explosive energy that kept you rooted even when you thought about stepping away. They’re the type of act you walk away from thinking, “How have I not been listening to these guys every day of my life?” The way they read the crowd and built the energy was something special — you could tell they were living for every second up there, and it made the whole experience feel even more personal. Wax Motif was another absolute standout. His set was deep, grimy, and full of those bass-driven house beats that just hit differently when you’re out under the stars. There’s a reason Wax Motif has been blowing up the way he has, and seeing him live at Breakaway confirmed it for me. His sound, both gritty and stylish, infused the night with an unexpected underground party vibe, despite our location in a baseball stadium.
And what can I say about The Chainsmokers? I’ll be real — it’s easy to be skeptical about artists who’ve hit that huge pop status, but they showed up and reminded everyone why they’re still at the top. Their set was like a journey through every stage of a wild night out — from anthemic singalongs to unexpected drops to emotional, nostalgic moments that hit you right in the chest. "Closer" still had everybody screaming every word like it was 2016 again, but it was tracks like "Something Just Like This" and "Don’t Let Me Down" that brought the whole place together. You could feel it — thousands of strangers, all moving and singing like we’d known each other forever.
The coolest part about Breakaway wasn’t just the music (even though it was incredible). It was the atmosphere — the sense that we were part of something real, something local but also big. While another big music event was happening a few hours away, I didn’t feel like missed out at all. Instead, I found my own version of that festival magic, right here in Mesa, Arizona. Breakaway Arizona 2025 wasn’t just a backup plan — it was the plan. And after this weekend, I honestly think I got the better deal.
